80% of the population will suffer from lower back pain at some point. The pain and
discomfort can be mild but consistent causing frustration at the inability to perform
simple tasks. At the other extreme the pain can be seriously debilitating and
without proper care can persist or deteriorate for a very long time.
While so many people complain of back pain, and their symptoms may seem
similar, the causes are many and varied. Many of our clients will say that their
pains are the same as their friends with the assumption that they must have the
same problem. It is important to recognize that pain is merely a symptom that
something is wrong - it is not conclusive of the cause. Pain is your body's method
of stopping you from doing something that could cause further injury. Pain does
not indicate the cause or origin of your injury - it is merely a message that
something is injured. True understanding of the origin of the injury only comes with
detailed investigation of the structure and function of your body. Even where pain
is not present your body will automatically alter it's function to protect the injured
tissues from further injury. The art of reading this altered state is the true measure
of a good practitioner.
Osteopaths are recognized for their skills and expertise at treating lower back
pain. At the Osteopathic Centre we have built a strong reputation on the effective
treatment and management of both acute and chronic lower back complaints. We
place primary emphasis on identifying the true cause of the problem and we utilize
a highly analytic approach to assessing both the local problem and it's effects on
the rest of the body.
Osteopaths are trained to identify the origins of pain in the body and through
detailed history taking and comprehensive examination we are able to identify the
origin of your pain - be it musculo-skeletal or from other causes. Working closely
with medical practice we are able to request further investigation should it be
required. Should the problem be outside of the realms of Osteopathic practice we
are quick to refer to the appropriate specialist for rapid resolution of your problem
(and pain). Once we have identified a mechanical origin to your pain we utilize a
series of standard tests to fully assess the structural and functional integrity of your
body. This thorough testing process includes evaluation of your muscular, skeletal,
orthopaedic and neurological systems.
Our perspective is to assess structure and function. We work on the premise that
if things are positioned well structurally and function optimally you should not
experience any discomfort.
The causes of lower back pain are many and varied. The symptoms experienced
generally correlate with the tissue that is affected. Consequently, two people may
be experiencing similar lower back pain, however, the causes of their pain may be
dramatically different. A good example of this would be sciatic pain - or pain
emanating from the back and referring down the leg. For one person the origin of
the pain may be a strain of one of the small joints in the spine. This causes
inflammation and the resultant swelling could put pressure on the nerve resulting in
pain along the nerve (down the leg). Another person may have similar symptoms,
however, their pain may originate from injury to a disc in their spine whereby the
disc is putting pressure on the nerve radiating down the leg - also resulting in pain
down the leg. The injuries are very different but appear the same from the pattern
of pain. The treatment in these cases would be vastly different.
Our approach is to clearly identify the cause of the dysfunction by testing each of
the tissues in your lower back to be certain that it's function is not compromised.
Using this approach we are able to confidently advise you of the most appropriate
treatment approach and the extent and duration of treatment required.
Alongside our rigorous treatment regime we place considerable emphasis on
understanding why your pain occurred now and what factors led to the vulnerability.
This is an area that is often overlooked and ignoring it will lead to future episodes
of pain. Addressing the why and what is the best strategy to ensure permanent
and lasting relief. At The Osteopathic Centre we undertake detailed analysis of
your posture, ergonomics and physical condition. Our aim is not only to restore
your health but moreover to take you beyond the levels of health you previously
experienced to a new level of function and ability. This is achieved by assessing
and correcting posture, analyzing and advising on ergonomics in the home and
office and by tailoring specific exercise programmes to address the weaknesses
and eradicate the vulnerabilities. We're not looking to create "superhumans" or
elite athletes, but expect to optimize your body functions so that you can enjoy life
fully -without compromises.
